What About Aunt Sulkeys Choice Quilt Block?

The Aunt Sulkeys choice quilt block was originally published in the Ladies Art Company. This is a simple quilt block that is easy for the beginner quilter along with the more experienced too.

The Ladies' Art Company began to sell patchwork quilt patterns nationwide through mail order in the 1890‘s. The names of the quilt block patterns are still consistent with the names that we know them as today.

Think of Aunt Sulkeys choice quilt block as a nine patch grid. Each of the nine mini block units needs to be completed before assembling the finished quilt block pattern.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 9 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors
(pink and white)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 1 patch 3½” square from the pink fabric. Cut 1 strip 2”x 8” from the pink fabric.
Cut 8 patches 3” square from the pink fabric.
Cut 1 strip 2”x 22” from the white fabric.
Cut 8 patches 3” square from the white fabric.

Step 2 - Sew the pink strip to the white strip side by side. Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric. Sub cut the strip into 2” units.

Step 3 - Using the remaining portion of the white strip, sew the pink/white units to the white strip. Place 2 pink squares toward the top and 2 pink squares toward the bottom. Sub cut the strip and squares into 3½” square units.

This will create the four corner mini block units.

Step 4 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3” square of pink and one 3” square of white fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

Complete 16 pink/white half square triangles.

Step 5 - Sew two pink/white half square triangles together with the pink triangles towards the lower center corners.

Complete 4 units.

Step 6 - Sew one pink/white half square triangle unit from Step 4 to one pink/white half square triangle unit from Step 5. Be sure to check for the correct color placement to create the chevron.

Step 7 - To assemble the Aunt Sulkeys choice quilt block, sew row one - corner mini block, chevron mini block, corner mini block.
