Basic Quilting Instructions

Stitching a design on your quilt is what makes a quilt a quilt.

Basic quilting instructions can help you get started.

What do I quilt and how do I start?

The hardest part about quilting is trying to decide what part of your quilt top should be quilted and what design you should use.

The pattern can be as simple as quilting in the ditch or a crosshatch grid to as complex as the basket weave. You can choose a meandering pattern, free motion quilting or outline quilting.

There are endless possibilities.

Hand quilting is a beautiful art. Some like the results of hand quilting more and also find the process relaxing.

Because we are all so busy, we are always trying to find ways to get the basic quilting done faster by choosing the simple and basic quilting designs.

As quilters are becoming more and more creative, we are realizing how much beautiful quilting can enhance our quilt tops.

I have found that gorgeous quilting can make a simple quilt top look elegant and rich.

When making decisions about quilting designs, be sure to consider the type of batting you plan to use.

Some batting, like 100% cotton, needs to be quilted every ¼” to 2”. A polyester/cotton blend needs to be quilted every 2“-3”.

Information about the density of the quilting required is on the packaging.

Select a quilting design that will compliment your quilt top. If the patchwork in your quilt top is busy or detailed, too much quilting can actually take away from the design.

Some of the classic tried and true designs are the ones we tend to fall back on. These are also great for the beginner quilter to learn and build on as your experience grows. Below is a list of just the beginning of the possibilities.

Remember you are quilting for the overall look of the complete quilt. Sometimes it is more effective to develop a quilting design for the whole quilt instead of focusing on each block.

The quilting is meant to compliment all of the blocks and borders to unite the overall design. The quilting design should look like it belongs in the block or open space. Not too large and not too small.

Mastering new skills is always exciting for a beginner quilter. Basic quilting instructions is a great place to start.
