Make a Bears Paw Quilt Block

The bears paw quilt block pattern is one of the many old time favorites.

Is it one of yours?

The bears paw quilt block pattern uses half square triangles. This pattern uses a nine patch grid pattern.

There are bears paw variations to the basic quilt block. Use your scraps to make an entire quilt, or use the same fabric if you want to.

Remember, there is no right or wrong way. Only your own creativity.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 6 inches

Materials:
Fat quarters in 2 colors (brown, tan)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques. Cut 1 patch 2 ½” square from the tan fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from both the brown fabric and the tan fabric.
Cut 1 patch 5 ½” square from both the brown fabric and the tan fabric.

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3 ½” square of brown fabric and one 3 ½” square of the tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

You will need a total of 4 half square triangles measuring 2 ½”.

Step 3 - Using the half square triangle method, complete one set of half square triangles measuring 4 ½”.

Step 4 - Sew row one, small half square triangle, small half square triangle, tan square.

Step 5 - Sew the remaining half square triangles in a vertical pattern like the pattern indicates.

Step 6 - Sew the large half square triangle to the vertical half square unit.

Step 7 - Sew the rows together to complete the bears paw quilt block.

There are variations of the bears paw quilt block pattern that can make your quilts creative and fun. For example, instead of using a large half square triangle, try using a solid square.

Get creative!
