Bears Paw Variation Quilt Block

The bears paw variation quilt block pattern lets you be just a little more creative. Or just to be different. Quilts are for learning to be creative.

The bears paw variation quilt block still uses the half square triangles as the basic bears paw pattern, just on a smaller scale.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 6 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors (brown and tan)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use your rotary cuting techniques. Cut 4 patches 2 ¼” square from the brown fabric.
Cut 1 patch 1 1/8” square from the brown fabric.
Cut 8 patches 2“ square from the brown fabric.
Cut 4 patches 1 3/8“ square from the tan fabric.
Cut 8 patches 2“ square from the tan fabric. Cut 4 strips 1“ x 3 1/8“ from the tan fabric.

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 2” square of brown fabric and one 2” square of the tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 1 3/8”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

You will need a total of 16 half square triangles measuring 1 3/8”.

Step 3 - Refer to the picture for unit placement. To complete one bear paw unit, sew row one, tan square, half square triangle, half square triangle.

Step 4 - Referring to the picture, sew a half square triangle unit to another half square triangle unit in the vertical positions. Make sure you place the triangles in the proper direction.

Step 5 - Sew the vertical half square triangle unit to a 2 ¼” brown square.

Complete the sewing of the remaining 3 bears paw pattern units.

Step 6 - Sew row one, a bears paw unit, tan strip, bear paw unit.

Step 7 - Sew row two, tan strip, small brown square, tan strip.

Step 8 - Sew row three, bears paw unit, tan strip, bears paw unit.

Step 9 - Sew the rows together to complete the bears paw variation quilt block pattern.

You can frame the bears paw variation quilt block pattern, set it on point (on the diagonal), or place a companion block with it to accent all of your beautiful quilting.
