The Calico Puzzle Quilt Block

The calico puzzle quilt block was originally published in the Kansas City Star in 1930.

This quilt block is a variation of the nine patch and uses the same grid of 9 patches to complete. With the use of squares and half square triangles, we are able to easily create this calico puzzle quilt block.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 6 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in three colors
(dark blue, light blue and white)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from the dark blue fabric.
Cut 1 patch 2 ½” square from the dark blue fabric.
Cut 4 patches 2 ½” square from the light blue fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from the white fabric.

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3 ½” square of dark blue fabric and one 3 ½” square of white fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

Complete 4 units of dark blue/white half square triangles.

Step 3 - Sew row one - dark blue/white half square triangle unit with the triangle pointed to the top right, light blue square, dark blue/white half square triangle unit with the triangle pointed to the bottom right.

Step 4 - Sew row two - light blue square, dark blue square, light blue square.

Step 5 - Sew row three - dark blue/white half square triangle unit with the triangle pointed to the top right, light blue square, dark blue/white half square triangle unit with the triangle pointed to the bottom left.

Step 6 - Sew the rows together to complete the calico puzzle quilt block.

This very old quilt block pattern was probably passed around through friends and family members long before it was ever published. The random way the half square triangles are positioned create the puzzle.
