The Double 9 Patch Quilt Block

The double 9 patch quilt block is fast and easy to make by the beginner quilter and the more experienced alike.

Make the double 9 patch quilt block with your scrap fabric or with a set color scheme. This pattern uses the basic nine patch grid.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in three colors
(dark blue, light blue and white)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 4 patches 3 ½” square from the white fabric.
Cut 1 strip 1 ½” x 15” from the light blue fabric.
Cut 1 strip 1 ½” x 8” from the light blue fabric.
Cut 2 strips 1 ½” x 15” from the dark blue fabric.
Cut 1 strip 1 ½” x 8” from the dark blue fabric.

Step 2 - Sew one 15” dark blue strip to one 15” light blue strip. Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric.

Step 3 - Sew one 15” dark blue strip to the light blue fabric of the 15” sewn strip unit to complete a dark blue/light blue/dark blue unit.

Step 4 - Sub cut the 15” sewn unit into 1 ½” units.

Step 5 - Sew one 8” light blue strip to one 8” dark blue strip.

Step 6 - Sew one 8” light blue strip to the dark blue fabric of the 8” sewn strip unit to complete a light blue/dark blue/light blue unit.

Step 7 - Sub cut the 8” sew unit into 1 ½” units.

Step 8 - Sew one dark blue/light blue/dark blue 1 ½” unit to one light blue/dark blue/light blue 1 ½” unit.

Step 9 - Sew one dark blue/light blue/dark blue 1 ½” unit to the unit to complete the 9 patch unit.

Repeat steps 8 and 9 until you have 5 completed 9 patch units.

Step 11 - Sew row two - white square, 9 patch unit, white square.

Step 12 - Sew row three - 9 patch unit, white square, 9 patch unit.

Step 13 - Sew the rows together to complete the double 9 patch quilt block pattern.

Experiment with different colors to see what results you can come up with. Sometimes it will surprise you.
