The LeMoyne Star Quilt Block

This is an easy way to make the LeMoyne star quilt block for the beginner quilter.

Use half square triangles that are easy for the beginner quilter to master. No “set-in” seams. The LeMoyne star is a beautiful old star pattern that we can all love.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in three colors
(red, black and white)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 4 patches 3 ½” square from the red fabric.
Cut 4 patches 3 ½” square from the black fabric.
Cut 4 patches 3 ½” square from the white fabric.
Cut 4 patches 2 ½” square from the white fabric.

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3 ½” square of red fabric and one 3 ½” square of black fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch Ό” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

You will need a total of 4 red and black half square triangles measuring 2 ½”.

Step 3 - Use the half square triangle method to complete a total of 4 red and white half square triangle units.

Step 4 - Use the half square triangle method to complete a total of 4 black and white half square triangle units.

Step 5 - Sew row one - white square, black/white half square triangle, red/white half square triangle, white square.

Be sure to check for the proper half square triangle placements in all of the colors. It will make a difference in the pattern.

Step 6 - Sew row two - red/white half square triangle, red/black half square triangle, red/black half square triangle, black/white half square triangle.

Step 7 - Sew row three - black/white half square triangle, red/black half square triangle, red/black half square triangle, red/white half square triangle.

Step 8 - Sew row four - white square, red/white half square triangle, black/white half square triangle, white square.

Step 9 - Sew the rows together to complete the LeMoyne star quilt block.
