Feel The Magic

The Square Deal Quilt Block

Feel the magic of the square deal quilt block from the Kansas City Star collection. There are so many unique and inspiring patterns for us to explore but are still fast and easy for the beginner quilter and the experienced too.

The square deal quilt block uses one of my favorites, the half square triangle. That is all. The triangles are just pointing in different directions to create the pattern. And not a bad pattern for just a bunch of half square triangles.

The block is based on a four patch grid. But, within each of the four patch units, there are also four patches. There are only 2 different sub-unit patterns. So it really is a very easy beginner quilt pattern.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 16 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors
(purple and white)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 32 patches 3½” square from the purple fabric.
Cut 32 patches 3½” square from the white fabric.

Step 4 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3½” square of purple fabric and one 3½” square of white fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler. Complete 64 purple/white half square triangles.

Step 3 - To complete sub-unit A, sew 4 purple/white half square triangles together to form a square. Make sure all of the purple triangles are pointing in the same direction.

Complete 12 sub-unit A’s.

Step 4 - To complete sub-unit B, sew row one by sewing two purple/white half square triangles together side by side with the triangles pointing to the upper left.

Sew row two by sewing two purple/white half square triangle together side by side with the first triangle pointing to the upper left and the second triangle pointing toward the lower right.

Complete 4 sub-unit B’s.

Step 5 - To complete one of the four patch units, sew row one by sewing two sub-unit A’s together side by side with the triangles all pointing to the upper right.

Complete row two by sewing a sub-unit A (triangles to the upper right) to a sub-unit B (the three main triangles pointing to the upper right).

Step 6 - Sew the rows together to complete the first of the four patch units.

Complete a total of 4 four patch units.

Step 7 - Sew row one of the square deal quilt block by sewing one patch unit from Step 6 (with the triangles pointing to the upper left) to another (with the triangles pointing to the upper right) side by side.

Step 8 - Sew row two by sewing one patch with the triangles pointing to the lower left to another patch, side by side and the triangles pointing to the lower right.

Congratulations! You have completed the square deal quilt block.
