Thrifty Nine Patch Block Pattern

Using your rotary cutting techniques , the Thrifty Nine Patch block pattern variation is a quick and easy quilting idea. You can make a complete quilt with the Thrifty block or use it in a sampler quilt.

To complete only one block for a sampler quilt:

Block Size: 6 inches

Materials:
Fat Quarters in 2 different colors
Companion block fabric
Backing fabric
Batting

Preparation: Pre-wash and iron the fabrics. Be sure to press all the seams as you go.

Step 1 - use the rotary cutting techniques. Cut 1 strip 1 ½” wide from the green fabric. Cut 1 strips 1 ½” side from the tan print fabric. Cut 1 strip 2 ½” wide from the companion tan fabric.

Step 2 - Sub-cut the 2 ½” strip into 2 ½” squares for the setting squares.

Sew the two 1 ½” strips right sides together. Sub-cut the sewn strips into 1 ½” pieces.

Step 3 - Sew the 1 ½” sub cut strips together making a four block unit with row one green tan and row 2 tan green.

Step 4 - Sew row one of the nine patch block, four block, tan (or companion block), four block.

Step 5 - Sew row two, tan, four block, tan.

Step 6 - Sew row three, four block, tan, four block.

Step 6 - Sew row three, four block, tan, four block.

Step 7 - Sew rows together to complete the nine patch block pattern.

Feel free to experiment. The thrifty nine patch block pattern can be made with any color combination. Rotate how you want to place the four block patch. Do you want to line up the green patches to be in a diagonal line or do you want to make your pattern flow in a random order.

Remember, this is your quilt. There is no right or wrong. Only your own creative imagination.
