The Turnstile Quilt Block
The turnstile quilt block is a fun and easy quilt block pattern with a little flare.
This quilt block uses triangles or quarter square triangles.
To complete one block for a sampler quilt:
Block size: 6 inches
Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in three colors
(red, white and blue)
Backing
Batting
Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from the blue fabric. Sub cut the squares in half diagonally to yield 4 large triangles.
Cut 1 patch 4” square from the red fabric. Sub cut the square diagonally (like an X) to yield 4 small triangles.
Cut 1 patch 4” square from the white fabric. Sub cut the square diagonally (like an X) to yield 4 small triangles.
If you are making more than one quilt block, use the quarter square triangle method.
Step 2 - Sew one red triangle (short side) to one white triangle (short side). Be sure to check for the proper placement.
Repeat the above process until all of the red and white triangles are joined.
Step 3 - Sew one blue triangle to one red/white triangle unit.
Repeat the above process until all of the blue triangles are attached to a red/white unit.
Step 4 - Sew row one, sew a completed red/white/blue unit to another red/white/blue unit.
Be sure to check for the proper placement of the blue triangle. This will affect your pattern.
Step 5 - Sew row two, sew a completed red/white/blue unit to another red/white/blue unit.
Step 6 - Sew the rows together to complete the turnstile quilt block.
The turnstile quilt block is one of those old favorites that can spice up any quilting experience.
Mastering new skills is always exciting for a beginner quilter.
