The Wheel of Chance Quilt Block
The wheel of chance quilt block is one of the old time favorites that was originally published in the Kansas City Star. It is also known as a fox and geese variation.
This easy quilt pattern is a one of the simple quilting patterns that even the beginner quilter can be proud to accomplish.
The wheel of chance quilt block uses the half square triangles and squares.
To complete one block for a sampler quilt:
Block size: 10 inches
Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors
(green and tan)
Batting
Backing
Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 8 patches 3½” square from the green fabric.
Cut 1 patch 2½” square from the green fabric.
Cut 8 patches 3½” square from the tan fabric.
Cut 1 strip 2”x 18” from the tan fabric.
Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.
Place one 3½” square of green and one 3½” square of tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.
Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.
Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.
Complete 16 green/tan half square triangles.
Step 3 - Sew two half square triangle units together with the green triangles pointing in the same direction.
Repeat the above procedure until you have completed 8 double half square triangle units.
Step 4 - Sew two double half square triangle units together with all of the green triangles pointing in the same direction making a square.
Complete 4 of these half square triangle units.
Step 5 - Sew row one - half square triangle unit, tan strip, half square triangle unit.
Step 6 - Sew row two - tan strip, green square, tan strip.
Step 7 - Sew row three - half square triangle unit, tan strip, half square triangle unit.
Step 8 - Sew the rows together to complete the wheel of chance quilt block.
